Have you seen my post on sourcing food photography props?

When I first started photographing food, I felt I needed to buy all the props to recreate any and every scene I saw. I snatched up every plate and cup that caught my eye, buying without direction. In the end, I spent a lot of money to fill shelves with props I wouldn’t ever use.

I’m here to tell you, you don’t need to drop a small fortune at the onset to style great food photos. Build your prop collection purposefully and as you need to. Have a cocktail shoot coming up? Take a pass through your local thrift store. A summer cake? Swap out that moody background for something brighter. Before you know it, you’ll have a well-rounded prop collection for any situation. ✌️

Summertime, for me, is alllll about sitting outside with friends sipping on drinks (bonus points for fire pits). I always go for an “any herb gin and grapefruit” smash with a bottle of high quality juice like Natalie’s — the juice is handcrafted in small batches and tastes incredibly fresh. Here’s how to make the cocktail: Muddle a sprig or two of fresh herbs with a sugar cube in a rocks glass. Fill with ice and add about 1.5 oz gin, 1/2 oz lime juice, 3 oz grapefruit juice, and a splash of soda. Garnish with a lime wedge. Summa’ time! #sponsored ✌️

Cooking fish can be intimidating, but it doesn't have to be! Citrus and herb-stuffed whole trout make an easy summer dinner in under 30 minutes. Keep things easy and ask your fishmonger to clean the fish for you. Once you are home, all you have to do is stuff the trout with lots of fresh herbs and bright citrus before roasting. Just be sure to keep the whole fish intact, head to tail!
