In this 4-hour workshop, students will learn how to pair, style, and shoot artisanal cheese with craft cocktails using the most exquisite seasonal, local product and unique styling elements. Students will learn through a combination of group discussion, instructor-led demos and individual shooting. The workshop will cover:
- Understanding cheese basics and how to combine and describe flavors
- Pairing, serving, cutting, and storing cheese for parties
- Crafting the perfect cocktail
- Lighting the scene using natural light
- Styling & composing elements to tell a food story
- TWO LIVE styling & shooting demos — craft cocktails and cheese boards
- Individual time to shoot a personalized cocktail and cheese board
Each student will be provided with photography surfaces and abundant styling props including flatware, glassware, plates, linens, and kitchen options.

About the instructors
Evan Kalman (@add1tbsp) is a food photographer, stylist, and the blogger behind add1tbsp — a food blog with drool-worthy recipes and practical food photography tips and advice. He’s spent years learning the ins and outs of food photography. Now, he teaches others how to create, style, and shoot beautiful and delicious recipes using the same resources he uses every single day. Evan has worked with national brands, publications, and websites.
Tenaya Darlington (@mmefromage) is an award-winning educator, author and speaker who has been blogging about cheese since 2009 (www.madamefromageblog.com). She has written a cheese guide, Di Bruno Bros. House of Cheese , and co-authored three books about cocktails with her brother, André Darlington: The New Cocktail Hour, TCM’s Movie Night Menus, and Booze & Vinyl. By day, she serves as an English professor at Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia; by night, she offers workshops on pairing cheese with wine, beer and cocktails. Tenaya is also the Cheese Director for the Tria group of restaurants in Philadelphia, and teaches community workshops on food writing and food photography. She loves gin.
